Choosing the right cloth nappy inserts

When it comes to cloth nappies, one of the most critical components is the nappy insert. Inserts are the absorbent layers placed inside the cloth nappy that soak up moisture and keep your baby dry. At Little Aussie Monster, a range of cloth nappy inserts are available, each designed to meet different needs. However, with so many options, it can be challenging to decide which insert is right for you and your baby. This guide will compare the various types of cloth nappy inserts available at Little Aussie Monster and outline key considerations when choosing the best option.

Types of Cloth Nappy Inserts

Microfibre

Microfibre cloth nappy inserts are a popular choice due to their quick absorption and fast-drying properties. Made from synthetic materials, microfibre inserts can hold up to seven times their weight in liquid, making them ideal for daytime use.

During times of high volumes of liquid such as overnight our recommendation is to boost with bamboo as microfiber has been known to bloat with too much volume. When overloaded, microfiber cloth nappy inserts can disperse when compressed, meaning the liquid can cause an overflow. Our bamboo cloth nappy insert or booster will draw the excess volume and lock it in to prevent any leakages and keep your little monster nice and dry.

Bamboo (Terry)

Bamboo cloth nappy inserts are known for their natural antibacterial properties, inherent moisture-wicking properties and high absorbency. They are softer and less bulky than microfibre, making them suitable for both daytime and nighttime use and ideal for boosting with other cloth nappy  inserts. Bamboo cloth nappy inserts are also a more sustainable option as bamboo is a renewable resource. However, bamboo inserts can take longer to dry compared to microfibre, so it’s best to have either a combination or a few more bamboo inserts than you need for those longer drying times.

Cotton Bamboo

Cotton is a natural fiber that is known for its softness, absorbency and durability which makes it ideal for the original cloth nappies.  These inserts are majority cotton blend and their high GSM ensure a maximum capacity that is equivalent to our bamboo cloth nappy inserts whilst maintaining the superior durability of cotton.  Making them perfect for long term use with more than one child and harsher laundry conditions.

Key Considerations When Choosing Cloth Nappy Inserts

When selecting cloth nappy inserts, there are several factors to consider:

Absorbency Needs

Consider whether the insert needs to handle light, moderate, or heavy wetting. For heavy wetters or overnight use, inserts like bamboo or cotton bamboo a combination of both or either and microfibre may be more suitable. Our tri-fold cloth nappy inserts are longer lasting and our most absorbent, so if you have a heavy wetter, consider making the switch.

Drying Time

If you need inserts that dry quickly, microfibre is the best option. Bamboo and Cotton lock moisture in and take longer to dry.

Material Preferences

Natural materials like bamboo and terry are more sustainable and may be preferred by those looking for an eco-friendly option.

Budget

Natural fiber inserts, like bamboo and cotton, can be more expensive upfront but are more sustainable, softer and lock in moisture. Microfibre is budget friendly and durable however it is less versatile in that is must be used in a nappy pocket.

Comfort and Skin Sensitivity

Babies with sensitive skin may benefit from natural fibre inserts such as bamboo or cotton, which are gentler on the skin than microfibre.

Choosing the right cloth nappy insert ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. By understanding the different types of inserts and considering factors such as absorbency, drying time, material, budget, and skin sensitivity, you can make an informed decision to keep your baby comfortable and dry.
