What Really Matters in a Modern Cloth Nappy
Does a Higher Price Really Mean Better PUL or TPU?
In the world of modern cloth nappies, there’s a common belief that price is the clearest indicator of quality. You’ll often hear claims that a more expensive nappy must use better materials, have superior waterproofing or last longer than a more affordable option. While that can sometimes be true, it’s far from the whole story.
At Little Aussie Monster, we believe that cost is a choice, not a guarantee of quality. We’ve deliberately chosen to keep our nappies affordable without compromising on the materials that actually matter.
One area where this misconception often appears is with waterproof fabrics such as PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) and TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane). Some brands suggest that because their nappies are more expensive, their waterproof fabric must automatically be better. In reality, many cloth nappy brands source their PUL and TPU from the same manufacturers and factories. The difference in price often comes down to branding, marketing, packaging, wholesale margins and business overheads rather than the waterproof fabric itself.
When assessing a cloth nappy, it’s important to look beyond the price tag and focus on how the nappy performs. A quality waterproof layer should keep moisture contained, withstand regular washing and remain flexible and comfortable against your baby’s skin. These qualities aren’t exclusive to premium-priced nappies.
The truth is that a well-made cloth nappy doesn’t need to cost a fortune. By keeping our business lean and focusing on practical, high-quality products, we’re able to offer nappies that perform well without the premium price tag.
Price and material quality aren’t the same thing
PUL and TPU are technical waterproof fabrics. Their performance depends on how they’re manufactured, how they’re bonded to the base fabric, and how well they stand up to repeated washing and everyday use. While poor‑quality laminate certainly exists, price alone doesn’t determine whether a product uses good PUL or TPU.
Two nappies can use very similar waterproof fabrics and still sit at very different price points. That difference usually comes down to how a brand operates, not just what goes into the nappy itself.
Choosing affordability doesn’t mean compromising quality
Keeping prices accessible is not an accident for us. It’s a deliberate decision. We believe reusable products should be practical for everyday families, not positioned as luxury items. By prioritising function over hype, we’re able to offer nappies that perform reliably while remaining affordable.
This doesn’t mean every low‑priced nappy on the market is well made, just as it doesn’t mean every expensive nappy is superior. What matters is transparency, consistency and how a product performs over time, not where it sits on a price ladder.
What actually matters when choosing a modern cloth nappy
Rather than relying on price as a shortcut for quality, it’s worth paying attention to how a nappy is designed to be used. Wash tolerance, care instructions, long‑term durability and honest product information all tell you far more than a number on a price tag.
A good modern cloth nappy should do its job well, fit comfortably, and hold up to real life, regardless of whether it’s marketed as “premium”.
Our approach
We don’t aim to be the cheapest option on the market, and we don’t believe quality needs to come with an inflated price tag. Instead, we focus on providing genuine value by making thoughtful choices about where we spend money and where we don’t.
At Little Aussie Monster, keeping our prices affordable is a deliberate decision. We know that many families are interested in making the switch to reusable products, but the upfront cost can sometimes feel overwhelming. Rather than positioning ourselves as a premium-priced brand, we’ve chosen to keep our margins reasonable so more families can access high-quality cloth nappies and reusable essentials.
That doesn’t mean cutting corners on the things that matter. We still use quality materials, work with experienced manufacturers and carefully select the products we offer. What we don’t do is increase our prices simply because other brands in the market do. We don’t believe a higher price automatically creates a better product.
Many factors contribute to the retail price of a cloth nappy, including branding, marketing, packaging, warehousing and business overheads. While these things all play a role in running a business, they don’t necessarily improve how well a nappy performs on your baby.
Our focus has always been on creating products that are practical, reliable and accessible to everyday families. We would rather help more families make the switch to reusables than create an exclusive product with a premium price point.
Because for us, affordability and quality aren’t opposites. They’re a balance. We believe families deserve products that perform well, last the distance and don’t cost more than they need to. That’s why we’ll continue to focus on offering dependable reusable products at fair and honest prices.
